Not just jazzin’ around.
North Coast Brewing Co. in Fort Bragg, California brews a Belgian Dark Strong Ale named Brother Thelonious. Ringing any bells?
For you jazz aficionados out there, I’m hoping the name Thelonious Monk comes to mind. Arguably one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, Thelonious Monk contributed several standards to the jazz repertoire. Give this clip of Monk’s standard “’Round Midnight” a listen and see if it sounds familiar.
So what do Thelonious Monk and jazz have to do with craft beer?
North Coast Brewing Co’s Brother Thelonious beer was brewed in partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Education and a portion of every bottle sold is donated to help fund jazz education.
The mission of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is to
“offer the world’s most promising young musicians college-level training by internationally acclaimed jazz masters and to present public school-based jazz education programs for young people around the world. All of these programs are offered free of charge to the students and schools, filling a tremendous void in arts education.”
Rich and malty with dark fruit notes and a light alcohol warmth, this Belgian-style abbey ale really sings.
Know of any other beers that were brewed to make a difference? Leave me a note in the comments.
